A
fierce battle is raging between the Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria
Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI) and the state government
over the ownership of the property housing the state secretariat of the
association at No. 2 Dan Archibong Street, Calabar.
While NASSI claims
it is the title holder of the property, the
government through its agents, the Calabar Urban Development Authority
(CUDA), says it does not belong to the former, and is threatening to demolish
the property if NASSI does not vacate the premises by September 15, 2004.
The ownership war is
raging despite a judgment delivered on April 14, 2003 by a magistrate court
in Calabar. The Chief Magistrate, I.B Etape, had struck out the suit
challenging the ownership of the property by NASSI.
Already, the
associations secretary, Edem Ekpenyong Asuquo, has alerted the state
governor, Mr. Donald Duke, of the threat to their property by CUDA, alleging
that some persons were using his name to perpetrate fraud.
In a save our soul
(SOS) letter addressed to Duke, NASSI among other issues complained that the
lives of small scale industrialists in the state was being endangered by some
persons posing as agents of the state government.
The association
averred that some persons had been using the name of the governor as having
granted them the certificate of occupancy of the building, which it claimed
was allocated to it by government.
