Flush out ghost workers, Alamieyeseigha urges Perm Secs

By Emma Gbemudu

Correspondent, Yenagoa

In a bid to reduce the soaring civil servants wage bill, the Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has challenged Permanent Secretaries in the state to flush out ghost workers in their ministries.

Lamenting that the bloated salary bill had become of grave concern to the state government while addressing Permanent Secretaries in Yenagoa, Alamieyeseigha averred that it needed to be checked in the interest of the state, pointing out that a careful screening of their nominal roll would prune the bloated workforce and subsequently reduce the salary bill to a meaningful level.

The Bayelsa chief executive frowned at the alarming rate of absenteeism, lateness to duty and other lapses exhibited by civil servants, warning the permanent secretaries to ensure that unproductive elements in the service were severely disciplined or shown the exit.

He charged them to brace up to their responsibilities as administrative head of their ministries by improving workers attitude to work, and directed that modalities be worked out to commence the immediate implementation of the 12.5% salary increase for civil servants from grade level 07 and above.

Alamieyeseigha also directed the prompt release of money for the provision of Peugeot 504 cars for the permanent secretaries to enhance their efficiency. He also advised them to maintain cordial working relationship with their commissioners to ensure maximum productivity.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Patrick Tekenah, on behalf of his colleagues, promised to work hard to promote a virile and productive civil service in the state.
