The Deputy Governor of Kaduna State,
Mr Stephen Kijo Shekari, is a faithful servant to a fault. He has acted as
the governor of the state more than any deputy governor in the country, yet
he has never betrayed the confidence reposed in him by the state Governor,
Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi.
The deputy governor acted during the most turbulent
periods in the chequered history of the crisis-ridden state.
For instance, in February 2000 and May the same
year, ethno-religious crises engulfed the state, resulting in a colossal loss
of lives and property. Shekari was at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, as
the acting governor during the two incidents. On one occasion, that of the
February 2000 Sharia crisis, the deputy governor trekked to the main gate of
the government house to plead with the demonstrators to give peace a chance.
The governor was away overseas on working visits
when the bloodletting ethno-religious crises engulfed the entire state.
Consequently, Shekari has been nicknamed by political pundits as a crisis
manager. And he is indeed.
But despite the laudable achievements, the deputy
governor has always played his role as the second fiddle. He has consistently
turned down press interviews because he did not want to clash with Makarfi on
some issues.
The governor is always the governor. I am only his
deputy, he often assets. Hence, his views are always those of the governor,
nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.
Last week, the governor was away overseas on
official visits to woo investors to the state, and once again, Shekari acted
as the governor of the state.
On Thursday, August 26, Shekari received, on
courtesy visit, the president, Visitation Panel to Ahmadu Bello University
(ABU), Zaria, at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna. The panel was led by the
Senate Committee chairman on Education, Senator Alex Usman Kadiri.
The presidential visitation panel told the acting
governor that they were at the government house to acquaint the state
government with the purpose of their visit.
According to the chairman, the panel would look
into the financial management of the crisis-ridden institution from 1999 to
2003 to determine its compliance with appropriate regulations, etc.
While responding, the acting governor expressed the
concern of the state government over the deterioration of education in the
country, nothing, Educational sector has been suffering due to conflicting
policies and poor management, in the country.
He, therefore, enjoined the presidential visitation
panel to do a thorough job, even as he pledged the state governments
determination towards resuscitating the institution and called for collective
efforts to reverse the ugly trend.
