Olympian Jerry
Okorodudu has berated Sports Minister , Musa Mohammed and Director of Sports
Development, Patrick Ekeji for daring to push the blame of Nigeria’s poor
performance at the Athens Olympics
on others, insisting that they should tender unreserved apology to Nigerians.
Okorodudu who spoke
witn Daily Independent in Lagos said the duo should be held responsible for
Nigeria’s dismal outing at the 28th Olympiad.
“At least if
I do not know about any other thing I was privileged to see what happened in
the boxing camp even before they left the shores of Nigeria and I sounded words
of advice on how to go about the whole thing but Ekeji would not listen to
anyone except himself. So why can’t he just apologise and say he was responsible for what
happened in Athens”.
Continuing, the
former professional boxer said the problem started right from home, When they
were leaving for Cuba, they did not even bother to go with sparring partners
and only God knows the people they were sparring with in Cuba. I learnt that
they were busy knocking down their opponenets in Cuba when in actual fact they
were fighting boxers that would never make it to the Olympics. I never
supported that idea of taking our team to Cuba in the first place.
He further berated
the sports ministry’s big wig for giving Nigerians false hope. “It
was wrong for them to have told us what to expect when it wsa glaring that we
would not even take one gold medal
going by available statistics and how athletes were doing at that point in
time’, added Okorodudu whose professional career was cut short by Joe
Lasisi.
