Halliburton scam : Reps summon Etiebet, Etete

HOUSE of Representatives yesterday summoned two former Ministers of Petroleum Resources, Chiefs Don Etiebet and Dan Etete to explain their roles in the $180 million bribe offered by Halliburton, a multi-national oil firm, to secure gas contracts in the country.

Former Chairman of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLG) Alhaji M.D. Yusuf and ex-Director-General, Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) were also summoned in connection with the contract scam.

Chief Etiebet is the National Chairman of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

Others are the Chairman of Hallibarton, Mr. Dave Lesar, Messrs Gilbert Chagouori Elichahi who was said to be a Chinese agent working for the oil multi-national in Nigeria, Messrs Udo Udo-Aka, Jeffrey Tesler and members of the TSK J Consortium.

The resolution followed the adoption of an interim report of the House Committee on Public petition based on complaints by Messrs Bestman C.N. and Co. on allegation of bribery against TSK J Consortium.

The panel is expected to unmask highly-placed Nigerian officials who allegedly pocketed $180 million (about N24.6 billion) in bribe to facilitate gas contracts to the multi-national oil firm.

Already, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission which regulates the American capital market had commenced formal probe into the allegation that Halliburton paid out $180 million in bribe to some Nigerians to secure gas contract in 2001/2002 for the construction of production trains for the NLNG project.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Chudi Offodile,in a submission to the House, yesterday said that the fraud was monumental and technical in nautre, and therefore called for a full scale investigvation.
