Why Bank Robbers Beat Us - Police
From Jide Orintunsin in Minna
Police in Niger State have attributed its inability to arrest the 10-man robbery gang that raided a Habib Nigeria Bank Minna branch killing five people and carting away more than N30 million, to lack of effective communications equipment and superior weapons of the robbers.
Explaining their failure, the state commissioner of police, Mr. Ernest Ibhaze at a press conference on Monday night in Minna said the police lost to a-well-fortified gang, who had more sophisticated and superior firearms.
Ibhaze spoke for the first time after the robbery operations that lasted for over 30 minutes without any counter act by the security agencies, despite the proximity of the bank to the police Area Commanders Office and the Minna 'A' Division Police Station.
According to the police boss, the robbers were able to get away due to the poor level of communication network of the command, which made it practically impossible to inform the next divisional headquarters of the approaching robbers.
He also admitted that the surveillance mounted by the police was beaten by the unfamiliar escape strategy adopted by the robbers.
Giving further insight on the Rambo-like operation, the commissioner said the gang changed vehicle at two different points, thereby making it difficult for his men to quickly identify the gang.
He said the gang abandoned the vehicles used for operation in Minna for a 306 Peugeot car and a bus, after killing the driver and conductor of the bus, while the 306 car owner was only carried away for few kilometers before he was pushed out of the car.
The commissioner explained further that the change of vehicles faulted the earlier information giving to its Bida operation. "While our men were waiting for three flashy cars, the robbers stormed Bida in different vehicles as the change of vehicles were not known to the Bida division, thereby making the robbers to escape".
