LAGOS — FIFTEEN persons have been arraigned before the Yaba Chief Magistrate Court Lagos on a 12-counts charge of stealing, assault, indiscriminate shooting and unlawful damage of properties worth over N5 million belonging to Deeper Life Bible Church and a block industry owned by Mr. Babagbemiga Olaiya, at Coker Estate, Oke-Shasha, Lagos.
Those who were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Ogala were Oniya Adebisi, Akiniyan Folasayo, Amidu Oguntoyinbo, Adeniyi Thomas, Ismaila Oseni, Abduraman Ishola and Tunde Lawson.
Other accused persons, according to the charge include Idowu Dasha, Niusa Lateef, Paul Ekwuruke, Gabriel Abiodun, Mukaila Majolagbe, Kayode Olaleke, Monday Adeshina and John Thompson. They committed the offence on March 14, 2004 at about 10a.m.
The offence, the prosecution said was punishable under section 451 of the Criminal Code cap C17, vol 11, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
The prosecution also informed the court that the accused persons unlawfully assaulted three estate supervisors, Lookman Babatunde, Gbenga Ogunmokun and Adegboyega James by inflicting injuries on them with matchet cuts.
Other charges preferred against the accused persons were that they alongside others at large allegedly stole N296,000 belonging to Phillip Taiwo Coker Poultry Farm and a wrist watch, property of one John Adaji.
The prosecution further told the court that the accused persons, on the said day, in an attempt to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere at Coker Estate, in Shasha area of Lagos State started shooting guns indiscriminately into the air without lawful authority.
The accused persons, who were represented by their counsel, led by Mr. Adeshina Ogunlana pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
Following the arguments canvassed by their counsel that none of the accused persons would jump bail, the trial Chief Magistrate allowed them to go home on bail in the sum of N250,000 with two reasonable sureties.
Further trial has been fixed for September 29, this year.
