PORT HARCOURT — GOVERNOR Peter Odili of Rivers State has blamed some communities in the state for colluding with hoodlums to terrorize the state saying that government had resolved to take “pro-active action” to curb violence in the state.
Dr. Odili spoke in a statewide broadcast to the people of Rivers amidst the tension arising from the frightening crime wave in the state.
The governor who was on vacation outside the country flew in Wednesday to address the crime wave in the state.
His words: “As part of our efforts at addressing the problem (of crime), we have also requested for an immediate re-organization of the security forces, their operations and posting of the personnel to ensure greater efficiency, enthusiasm and renewed confidence.
“I must place on record that prior to this time, the security operatives had on our directive given due consideration to our desire of not unduly disturbing previous searches for these hoodlums. It has however become apparent that several of these hoodlums have their operational bases and hideouts in our villages; we have therefore given instructions that all necessary steps be taken to decisively rid our state of these undesirable elements that have constituted themselves into a menace, terrorizing and inflicting fatal or grievous harm on innocent citizens.”
He further noted, “we are particularly saddened that despite our several appeals for cooperation, several of our communities have wittingly or unwittingly colluded, aided or tolerated these armed gangs to the detriment of the larger society.” He expressed hope that “now that we have directed the security forces to take the needed pro-active action and leave no stone unturned in their task, we would once and for all put an end to this unsavory period of our affairs which is threatening to mar all our efforts to build a just society.
“Let me on behalf of the law enforcement agencies sincerely thank all those who have shown support and assisted us with relevant information. Please, be rest assured that the several persons arrested by the police in connection with these criminal activities will be brought to book.
“Government sincerely regrets the loss of lives and property and commiserates with all persons affected by the untoward incident caused by these evil men. We must and shall ensure that peace and tranquility is restored and we enjoin all citizens to go about their lawful businesses. For the evildoers and their collaborators, it is now time for you to face God’s and the people’s justice for all your deeds against innocent people and society,” he added.
