Cabinet sack: Odili shocks politicians
Wednesday
dissolution of the River State Executive Council (exco) came as a surprise to
most political appointees in the state.
Governor Peter Odili, announcing the
dissolution, direct all commission, special Advisers, Head of Service and
secretary to the state government (SSG) to hand over to the permanent
secretaries in their respective ministries and bureaux.
Some of the political appointees contacted
expressed shock and disbelief about the development.
The dissolution which was the last of the
16-paragraph broadcast came as a surprise after months of waiting for a new
executive council.
Most of the commissioners and political
appointees received the sack message through the broadcast as they were not
aware that the governor who had travelled overseas on vacation was back in the
state.
Odili who cut short a two week vacation
abroad, the first in two years, returned home following spate of violence and
shooting in the state in the past two weeks.
The dissolution of the state exco came as
a surprise to members of the public who speculated that Odili would not sack
political office holders despite intense pressure on him.
Weeks after the state House of Assembly
cleared six candidates for appointments into the state executive council, there
was no indication that the governor will carry out the action.
At a retreat last July for political
appointees, Odili directed them to prepare their handover notes and submit to
him within one week.
Odili also told the gathering that an
assessment would be done and by the end of the week, the verdict of which will
be made public and those who had not done well would be asked to look for
something else to do.
According to Odili, political appointees
had misconstrued government’s patience to mean inability to act, pointing out
that government’s resolve to serve Rivers people cannot be compromised.
Odili had expressed displeasure over how
some top government functionaries had worked to sabotage the new spirit of
honesty, service, integrity and ethics.
The Governor accused some government officials of
colluding with contractors to inflate proposals submitted to government and
warned that the issue of frugality was not a matter of rhetorics.
