Two students die in LASU as suspected cult groups clash
FURTHER killings in tertiary institutions were recorded yesterday at the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, when two undergraduates of the institution were killed in a clash between rival cult groups.
According to a resident of the university community, shooting started as early as 8.00 am, which made other students to move out of the campus for safety.
The shooting, which lasted several hours, claimed the lives of two male students whose identities could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
But what obviously saved the situation from deteriorating was the arrival of a team of mobile policemen despatched to the troubled campus by the Police Commissioner, Mr. Israel Ajao.
Despite the police presence, most students still felt unsafe and apprehensive and were seen leaving the premises with their luggage.
Incidentally there is a police post at the gate of the university, but the presence of the security agents could not stop cult activities, which continued to thrive.
Last year, a final year student of the institution, who was also a member of the student union, was shot dead while taking his examination right inside the hall.
Cult activities thrive in virtually all higher institutions in the country. And last month, three students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) were killed in clash between rival cult members.
The Guardian found out that the causes of this anti-social activity could be traced to affluence usually associated with the rich on the campus.
Also, many Nigerians have blamed the Federal Government for its perceived lax attitude to the war against cult menace.
The government is expected to take a bold and decisive step to stamp out cult activities in the nation's institutions of learning.
Besides government's attitude, lack of the will to act against cult members by the authorities of the nation's tertiary institutions, the absence of state security agents on the campuses, are factors which have been cited as likely to make successful war against the social menace difficult to win.
