Wayas, Ejoor, Anenih, others unite to defend oil law, quest for South South Presidency

MAJOR South-South leaders buried their political and ethnic differences on Wednesday to adopt a common stance on some burning issues affecting their region and their people especially the suit by 22 state governments seeking to reverse the gains of the new oil dichotomy abrogation law and the 2007 presidential race.

Among those who issued a communique on the issues after a meeting in Abuja, which began on Tuesday were former Senate president, Dr. Joseph Wayas, erstwhile Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. David Ejoor and acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP's) Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih.

Also in attendance were All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) National Chairman, Chief Don Obot Etiebet, former Bendel State Governor Dr. Osaigbovo Samuel Ogbemudia and erstwhile Chief of General Staff, Admiral Mike Akhigbe. Also there were former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, erstwhile Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Matthew Mbu and his Information counterpart, Chief Tony Momoh, as well as many past and serving ministers, National Assembly members, ambassadors and industry and finance chiefs.

At the close of the meeting on Wednesday, the leaders of the zone took some crucial decisions on the issues. They resolved to "work assiduously in concert with other zones" to produce the next president of Nigeria in 2007".

The assembly in its communiquZ on Wednesday directed its organs to put the machinery in place for the actualisation of the objective.

Other resolutions in the communiquZ signed by Chief Joseph Wayas, the convener of the assembly and the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Chief Raymond Dopkesi were:

  • To resist any attempt to reverse the existing abrogation law with regards to the onshore/offshore dichotomy;

  • to work with the Federal, state governments and other organisations to resolve the problem of youth restiveness in the zone. The assembly also called on the Federal and state governments to pursue and implement policies that would provide jobs and business opportunities for the youths of the zone; and

  • to work with traditional rulers and political office holders in the zone and join hands in forging a new partnership and unity amongst all the peoples of the area to the attainment of our collective goal.

    The assembly pledged the total loyalty of the zone to the Federal Government and affirmed the nation's indivisibility, unity and territorial integrity.

    The assembly also frowned that the zone had not been well compensated though it had contributed immensely to the economic, political and social development of the country.

    It described as ill-motivated, unpatriotic, provocative and insensitive, the ongoing moves by northern and some South-West governors to reverse the abrogated onshore/offshore dichotomy.
