Rights groups seek tighter security against child trafficking
From Anitie Akpan, Calabar

TO check the high rate of child trafficking in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, a joint patrol of security agencies of the states has been set up.

The call was made at a workshop held in Calabar, which was organised by the Centre for Training Development Activities (CETDA) in collaboration with Global Rights.

The workshop, which centred on the problems of human trafficking in the two states, traced the illegal trade mainly to poverty.

Other factors include "limited capacity of law enforcement agencies to regulate and monitor state borders, increased materialistic values among youths, unemployment, ignorance and the absence of legal, regulatory and effective implementation frameworks and strategies".

In a statement signed by the programme co-ordinator of CETDA, Mr. Emeka Nwosu, at the workshop, resolved that "there should be a joint patrol group of security agencies with assistance from the communities, logistics from the states in order to aid them with the monitoring and policing of the borders around the states".

It also resolved that Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), traditional rulers, church leaders, government and stakeholders need to embark on massive public education on the nature, forms and challenges of human trafficking.

  • That given the spinal role of the church and traditional institutions in the dissemination and education of their constituents about the problems of the society, there is need to engage them more intensively in this respect;

  • that traditional rulers should help government, while government on its part should create channel for more jobs to stem the tide of trafficking in persons;

  • that there should be joint, collaborative and deliberate efforts by Akwa Ibom and Cross River states governments to check the illicit business of human trafficking, which is a new form of slavery;

  • that given the role of transport managers in the illegal trade, they should be educated and formally appointed to act as monitors with authority to report cases of trafficking.

    It added that there is need for collaborative action between government and members of civil society, churches and communities to address the question of re-integration of victims of trafficking.
