Alli meets religious, youth leaders, cautions against rumour mongering
From Isa Abdulsalami, Jos

IN his spirited effort to ensure lasting peace, the Plateau State Administrator, Maj. Gen. Chris Alli (rtd), has urged religious and youths' leaders in the state to always caution their members against rumour mongering. He added that he was aware of rumours being peddled by some people with the intention of causing trouble and disaffection among communities in the state.

Although he did not explain the nature of the rumours, he, however, warned that in the event something untoward happened, such persons would be held liable.

The Administrator disclosed this during a dialogue with religious leaders at Government House, Jos.

He acknowledged the leaders' contributions towards the peace process, imploring them to maintain the tempo until a permanent solution was found.

Alli assured that the distribution of relief materials to displaced persons would continue, pointing out that more of the items are being received from the federal and state governments as well as donor agencies.

He commended the people who had willingly surrendered illegally acquired weapons in their possession, emphasising that the function of protecting life and property was not that of an individual but government.

He expressed delight that as a result of the peace being experienced in the state, government has been able to carry out some activities aimed at putting smiles on the faces of the people.

On the peace conference, the Administrator restated that he was overwhelmed by the level of commitment and participation, adding that it was an indication that people in the state want peace.

He assured that all the recommendations of the conference would be religiously implemented except those that ran contrary to the constitution or require long-term solution.

While addressing the youth leaders separately, Alli told them that the peace being experienced in the state was a very positive development as it has created opportunities to better the lot of the people.

He stated that if they had not put an end to violence, the state would not have witnessed peace, assuring that government would continue to maintain the present situation so that development can commence.

He said a number of positive changes have taken place due to the peace now enjoyed in the state.

He said some of the changes are the foundation laying of the Mangu Water project, regular payment of workers' salaries, payment of students scholarships and signing of contract agreement for the reconstruction of the Jos main market.

The Administrator added that for the past three months, the state government has been working closely with the Federal Government and its agencies to attract development to the state and to empower the youths economically.
