Imo Assembly clears speaker of alleged misdeeds
THE Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed a vote of confidence on its Speaker, Chief Kelechi Nwagwu, after a probe that he was not in any way involved either in child kidnapping or certificate scandal.
Recently, a news report allegedly linked the speaker with child kidnapping and certificate scandal and displeased by the publication, the speaker set up a committee of the House to investigate the source of the publication.
The panel, which was headed by the chairman of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Amaechi Nwoha absolved the speaker of any misdeed.
As a result of the probe, two members of the House, Chuks Onyeji and Ralph Igbokwe were suspended indefinitely from proceedings.
The two men were allegedly linked with the source of the "malicious publication" aimed at bringing the speaker to disrepute.
The vote of confidence motion was sponsored by Emma Dike (Orsu) and House Committee chairman on Information.
He said in last 14 months, the leadership style of the speaker, contrary to criticisms has proved to be "pace setting beyond any reasonable doubt".
Other lawmakers who spoke in favour of the speaker included Chief Jasper Ndubuaku (Isiala Mbano); Ikenna Elezianya (Owerri West); Chief Damian Ogu (Onuimo); Declan Emelumba (Oru West); Minority Leader, Ugochuwu Nzekwe (Nkwere); Amaechi Nwoha (Nwangele) among others.
Nwagwu pledged to continue to carry the House along in decision-making.
