Attention, Minister of Power and Steel
SIR: I write to express my profound gratitude to the Federal Government for commencing work on the rural electrification of our community, Amikanle in Lagos State.
For the information of the honourable minister, Amikanle which comprises seven other villages is located at the back of Ray Power/AIT station in Alagbado, Lagos State. The contractor handling the project surfaced in May 2003 and commenced work on erecting poles. After one year, he reappeared again after the support of the communities to bring some cable wires and transformers but the cable wires were not enough for the job.
Much as the Federal Government is interested in helping us with electricity, we want to appeal that the government should mobilise the contractor since his complaints have always been lack of funds and that he has never received money since he began the job. I also want to express fear as to the reason why the 500 kv transformers earlier allocated in the original contract was changed to 300 kv.
We are also worried with the way the contractor is exploiting the communities as if the project is not a government project now.
It is appaling that since the country got independence more than 43 years ago, there are still towns and villages in the country without electricity and access roads.
Since Lagos State government said our villages are Federal Government designated properties because of the abandoned Federal Housing Estate situated in the area when Alhaji Lateef Jakande was Honourable Minister of Works in 1993, we appreciate the Federal Governments effort. But this project should be completed to earn more glory and take us away from darkness.
Nife Williams,
