Bush Supports AU's Efforts on Dafur
From Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja

President George Bush has commended effort of African Union (AU), aimed at finding a lasting solution to the conflict in the Sudanese Dafur region.

Bush, in a statement issued by the Embassy of the United States of America in Abuja, called for an end to the violence pepertrated by Arab militias, which has led to the death of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of thousands more even as he called on them to respect the cease-fire agreement.

"President Bush welcomes the African Union's efforts to bring a lasting solution to the Dafur conflict by sponsoring political talks between the Government of Sudan and the Dafur rebels in Abuja, Nigeria," the statement added.

Continuing, the statement noted that "the Abuja talks began on August 23 and we understand that the parties to the conflict are participating at senior levels without preconditions. We strongly urge the participants to build on the cease-fire agreement to create a just resolution to the conflict that will ultimately allow the displaced to return to their homes safely and with dignity," the statement quoted Bush as saying.

Bush commended African Union for the deployment of cease-fire monitors and a protection force to Dafur, while hoping that the effort would help improve security and create conditions in which humanitarian assistance could be more effectively provided to the Sudanese people.

"As the United States has said before, the government of Sudan must halt all Janjaweed violence and hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations. All parties including the Dafur rebels must respect the cease-fire and allow the free movement of humanitarian workers and supplies," the noted.
