Iraq: Group Calls for French Journalists' Release
From Kola Ologbondiyan in Abuja

Assembly of Muslims in Nigeria (AMIN) has called for the release of two French journalists held hostage by a Resistance Group in Iraq in order to protect the image of Islam in the name of which the group has always based their actions.

Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh Al-Hussaini, the chairman of the group, who stated this in a statement, noted that "Islam, as a religion of peace, does not sanction violence against people who have committed no wrongs by any person or group of persons who profess believe in it."

AMIN called on other Islamic groups around the world to try to give a correct representation of Islam and to limit all their actions to the guidelines and provisions of Islam, which is a religion revealed by Allah for the guidance and salvation of mankind in general.

"On the other hand, AMIN would like to remind the world powers especially the United States that unless they deal with the rest of the world in a fair and just manner and give up double standards, the peace that they desire to achieve would always elude the world," Al-Hussaini added.

The group stated that "it is pertinent to remind Iraqis to always distinguish between those upon whom they have grievance for what has happened to their country and foreign nationals working there," adding that "the French journalists, in particular, are only engaged in news gathering, which in a way helps to tell the world about the situation in Iraq.

"Those who took the journalists hostage have laid the conditions that unless the French government rescinds its decision to ban the wearing of head scarves by Muslim girls in public school in France, stressing that the ban did not target Muslims alone as it has also affected the followers of other faiths, namely Christians and Jews," the group stated.
