Slain Igboman: Pedro Sues for Peace
By Shaka Momodu
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mr. Femi Pedro, has called on the Igbo Community to remain calm, promising the state government's support to finish out the killers of a 28-years old Igboman, Cosmos Iwiyi, last Friday, in Oregun, Ikeja.
The call became neccessary when hundreds of placard carrying Igbo protesters stormed the state secretariat to register their displeasure over the murder of their kinsman. The protesters, led by the Akeweje of Oregun, Chief E.A.S. Njoku, alleged that Cosmos met his untimely death in the hands of some suspected traditional oro ritualists.
Addressing the crowd, and their leaders at a closed door meeting, Pedro said the incident called for maturity, resilience and patience. He praised the decision of the Igbo leaders to register their protest peacefully with the government rather than seeking reprisals.
Pedro noted that the Igbo have lived peacefully with their Yoruba hosts for many years, prompting the conferment of chieftaincy titles on some Igbo leaders in the community.
He therefore urged his audience to discountenance the motion that the Igbo are despised by the Yoruba or that the murder has ethnic coloration. Rather, Pedro argued that what happened was a criminal act and would be treated as such. He explained that much as people have freedom of worship and the right to observe their tradition, such rights could not serve as a licence for murder.
The deputy governor called on the Police to expedite action on the murder and promised to convene a meeting between the leaders of the two tribes in the community.
A delegation comprising the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mrs. Remi Adikwu-Bakare, her Special Duties counterpart, Chief Dele Ajomale and the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Lanre Ogunyemi, later paid the family of the deceased a condolence visit.
