Court Orders Reinstatement of 151 Teachers From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the University of Ibadan to reinstate 151 teachers of the International School, an affiliate of the university, relieved of their appointments, last month. Following the dispute over the conditions of service which was rejected bythe workers the university sacked all the school employees from the principal to the junior cadres. However, the affected teachers dragged the authority to court to enforce their fundamental human rights. The plaintiffs, Mr Kolade Akanbi and three others, on behalf of the sacked teachers claimed that their employer by a letter dated July 19, 2004 relieved them of their employment as staff of the International School. Mr Tunde Oluponna, the plaintiff lawyer told the court that the university's action in disengaging the services of the teachers was contrary to the provisions of the University Act. In his ruling, Justice Tijani Abubakar said the fact of the case are very clear, the applicants are seeking to protect their fundamental human rights threatened by the act of the respondents and that the attendant loss cannot be compensated for by the award of damages. "The conduct of the respondents by disengaging the services of the plaintiffs and advertising same appear in my view to be an attempt to steal a match on the plaintiffs." "By advertising the positions of the applicants, the respondents have clearly shown that they are ready to replace the plaintiffs." Consequently, Justice Abubakar ruled that there is urgency in the matter, their rights are being threatened by the conduct of the respondents. The court also ordered that both parties should maintain the status quo ante pending the determination of the suit before the court.
