Jigawa Workers Contribute N848m to Pension Scheme From Bala Nasir in Dutse Civil servants in Jigawa State have contributed over N848 million to the state's contributory pension scheme which commenced three years ago. Making this disclosure in Dutse, the state Commissioner in charge of Salary and Pension, Alhaji Mustapha Yunusa Yandutse, said local government workers are also to start their own soon. He said the pension scheme, initiated by Governor Saminu Turaki in 2001, involves government workers only adding that with the success recorded so far, government has now find it pertinent to also get local government workers to start theirs so as to benefit from the scheme. According to Yandutse, the scheme is to be entrusted on a trustee board, which will soon be constituted by the state governor. On salary, Alhaji Yandutse said N400 million is paid every month to workers while workers in the 27 local government areas of the state are paid N500 million making it N900 million. He said "in the last three years, we are able to pay the cumulative arrears of pensions to the tune of N320 million including gratuities and death benefits of retired civil servants. "All these were initiated by this administration to alleviate the sufferings pensioners are subjected to by the old pension scheme which compounds their sufferings instead of alleviating it." He pledged the administration's commitment to finding solution to all problems being faced by workers, especially after retirement.
