Lawmaker Blames LG Chiefs for Flood From Mustapha Muhammad in Maiduguri Chairman House Commi -ttee on Inter-Governmental Affairs, Honourable Dayo Ogunniyi, has attributed the recent flood disaster in Gombe and other areas to the delay in clearing drainages by council chairmen. He flayed the non-challant attitude of local government chairmen towards drainage clearing and called for the intervention of the governors to avert further flooding. Ogunniyi said this in Maiduguri yesterday, when members of his committee went on a visit to identify the ecological problems of Borno State and possible ways of solving them; and also to find out the amount released for ecological problems from 1999 to 2004 across the states of the federation. He said the major set back in the ecological system is the technical know-how to cater for problems, adding that government should outline modalities to tackle the problems. Ogunniyi said Madu -ganari and central mosque areas of Maiduguri need critical intervention to avert flooding. He expressed satisfaction with the planning of Maiduguri township and described it as unique, adding that the nature of the Maiduguri rainfall could have instigated erosions and its likes. Governor Abubakar Modu Sheriff, in his response said the committee's job is most difficult, as it is difficult to solve the problem without knowing the real problem. According to him, one of the lapses of the house committee is that some don't want to do their jobs but commended the committee for its seriousness by coming along with a technical personnel to identify the problems and find lasting solution.
