Goje Flays Firm's Donation to Flood Victims
From Saka Ibrahim in Gombe
Governor Danjuma Goje of Gombe State yesterday berated the management of Asahaka Cement Company for making a token donation of relief materials worth N3.5 million and a cash donation of N450,000 to victims of last Friday flood disaster in Gombe.
Although Goje did not reject the donation, he expressed disappointment that the company, though making billions of naira from the state resources could not assist over 1,500 displaced people in a big way.
According to him, the company's assistance at this time of grief was not acceptable, especially when a southern state like Akwa Ibom made a cash donation of N5 million and relief materials more than that of Ashaka.
Said Goje, "I want to say that Ashaka Cement Company is making profit but in the area of community development, you are supposed to do more. If somebody from Akwa Ibom can donate N5 million, we expect Ashaka to do more. We are not satisfied with the donation.
"We are aware you are making billions of naira from our God-given natural resources. We have limestones and gympsum. We deserve more assistance. We are aware you have billions of naira starched in banks."
The govenror also lambasted the company for not funding the N8 million dialysis centre of the Federal Medical Centre, despite the fact that the hospital approached it for assistance.
He advised the company to change its attitude and assist in moving the state forward.
Earlier, the Sales and Marketing Manager of the company Alhaji Haruna Mamuda, announced the donation of the relief materials including cement and foodstuff.
He said the N450,000 cash donation was personal donations from senior general managers of the company.
Mamuda while reacting to the governor's comment after the donation, said the donation was in line with the company's policy and that the company is executing many projects in the state.
