Tinubu Wants Traditional, Orthodox Medicines Integrated
Lagos
By Iheanyi Alozie
Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State has advocated an integrated national health programme that would have both orthodox and traditional medicines to complement each other with a call on the Federal Governemnt to expedite action in its actualisation.
He observed that traditional medicine was as old as the existence of Nigeria and Africa, pointing out that it was the only form of medicine for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of social, mental and physical illnesses before the advent of orthodox medicine.
He said even now, more than 80 per cent of the population of Nigeria and Africa use traditional medicine in various forms.
Tinubu, represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Leke Pitan, made the call at the occasion held in Lagos to mark the second African Traditional Medicine Day.
He said the call becomes imperatives because of the acceptability, accessibility and affordability of this form of medicine by the majority of Africans.
According to him, "the importance of traditional medicine and its growing use has created a public health challenge in terms of policy, safety, quality control and efficacy, in terms of access and rational usage."
He noted that Lagos State government was the first in the federation to pass a law in 1980, giving recognition to traditional medicine practice by setting up a board for the registration and regulation of practitioners, with a view to streamlining their practice, and to give them their rightful place in the scheme of things, adding that five hectares of agricultural land was allocated to the board for traditional medicine for the cultivation and conservation of herbal plants and seeds to ensure adequate and abundant supply of herbal ingredients for traditional medicine practitioners.
He reassured that his administration would not relent in its drive to increase the awareness and recognition of the potentials of traditional medicine as a developmental tool towards a well-integrated national health system.
