600 Scholars for Quranic Recitation Niger From Jide Orintunsin in Minna Niger State edition of the 19th annual National Quranic Recitation Competition will gulp N10 million, as over 600 Islamic scholars prepare to vie for honour. The competition, which will kick off with the local government elimination series between September 9 and 11 will be rounded off with the state competition, where 42 local government candidates are to compete for honours between October 2 and 9. Briefing newsmen in Kagara, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State on the level of preparation, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Alhaji Bala Gona, said plans have been concluded by the council to host the event. According to him, winners at the state level will represent the state at the national competition at a date to be announced by the centre for Islamic Studies of the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, organiser of the national competition. Gona said each of the 42 local government areas is expected to participate, adding that a total of 672 candidates are expected to vie for honours at various categories. The chairman, who is also permanent secretary, Ministry of Local Government. Community Development and Chieftancy Affairs said the competition was purely righteous, which is the reason why its organisation and execution is solely funded through "sadakat" from Muslim Ummah.
