Falae Is A Military Apologist, Says Akande
THE crisis within the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere is yet to show signs of resolution, as the principal characters involved in the discord engage in furious exchanges.
And this is in spite of the reconciliation of the two factions supposedly achieved during a meeting on Friday in Apapa Lagos.
At the weekend, former Osun State governor, Chief Bisi Akande described Chief Olu Falae as working for the presidential ambition of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, to the detriment of the Yoruba race.
Last week, Chief Falae, former Minister of Finance and presidential candidate in 1999, accused Chief Akande, a factional leader of the AD, of stalling efforts of the Afenifere to reconcile the party's two factions.
Said Chief Akande of Falae, "Our prayer now is how Falae would distance himself from the AD in order to rescue the party from his political bad luck. He has never won election in his life.
"He is just masquerading as a democrat, but a military apologist, who is scheming underground to bring back the man, who annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections and caused so much pains to this nation".
Falae not only faulted the Lagos convention that produced Akande as national chairman of AD, but he also indicted him for pushing to disintegrate the party.
His words: "The Afenifere set-up a committee late last year, to look at the future of Afenifere. And who headed that committee
"That is the Akande committee's recommendation in writing. So, he is now arguing against what he himself recommended."
The Afenifere, at its meeting in Akure on August 17, recognised the Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa faction as the national chairman of AD, prompting Akande to allege that the body did so in its "desire to destroy AD and create a new political party from its carcass."
And responding to Falae's attack against him, Akande told The Guardian that he did not shun the Akure parley. Rather, he said the meeting was convened in bad faith.
"It is true that I was present at a meeting where August 17 was chosen but I accepted that date because usually we hold our meetings in Lagos. I knew I would be delivering a lecture at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos.
"I had planned much earlier that after the meeting, I would move to UNILAG for the lecture. I never knew, and I never thought that the meeting would hold in Akure.
"I travelled outside the country and I quickly returned in order to attend the meeting. But unfortunately, I came to discover that the meeting has been shifted to Akure. I did not consider it wise for me to undertake such a long journey and miss the UNILAG event," he said.
Akande said that Chief Falae as a politician had recorded "a history of political bad luck" to which the AD must distance itself.
"He carried the same bad luck to Afenifere, with the D'rovans Hotel decision to choose him as the AD candidate in 1999. He carried the bad luck to APP by contesting on its joint ticket with the AD and failing the progressives of this country.
"And now since year 2002, he has joined those who want to bring bad luck to the AD," he said.
Meanwhile, Prince Timothy Adebowale, the AD Congress Secretary, Ogun State said the Afenifere did not speak the mind of the people for claiming to recognise the Akinfenwa faction against that of Akande.
He advised the organisation to stop dabbling in affairs of the AD because "Afenifere is not an affiliate of Alliance for Democracy nor a registered party with INEC."
