    Akiga, ex-Minister dies

    MATTHEW OGWUCHE, Abuja Bureau Chief

FORMER Sports minister Mr. Steven Akiga, is dead. Akiga died yesterday of an undisclosed illness at about 7.00 p.m, at Zankli Medical Centre, Abuja.

He had been hospitalised at the centre for about three days, before giving up the ghost last night.

Family sources who confirmed the death of the two-time minister, also confirmed that his corpse was yesterday deposited at the National Hospital mortuary, in Abuja.

The late Akiga, who was earlier Police Affairs minister under the Obasanjo regime, was seconded to the Sports ministry after the death of Mr. Ishaya Mark Aku in the EAS Airline crash at the Kano Airport in May 2002.

The late minister had been out of public glare after he was dropped from President Obasanjo’s second term cabinet.

He however, played an active role in preparations leading up to the 8th All-Africa Games tagged Abuja 2003 where he featured prominently among the "eminent personalities" to host the games.

Among his major national assignments was leading the Nigerian contingent to the last World Cup, Korea/Japan 2002 as leader of delegation.

The late Akiga, a keen sportsman and ex-footballer, he was very close to Super Eagles players during his tenure.

Some of them may remember his words to them just before the World Cup when he declared:

"As a former footballer .. I’ll be on the pitch to train with the players; I’ll sleep in the same hotel with them and we will eat the same food.

"I will ensure everything is in order". He was a principled advocate against age cheats in youth football.
