Don’t abandon Niger Delta for NDDC - Mudiaga-Odje

    SEGUN JAMES, Warri

GOVERNMENT has been advised not to leave the development of the Niger Delta region solely to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Warri based constitutional lawyer and author of the book, The Struggle For Resource Control and True Federalism in Nigeria, Mr Akpo Mudiaga-Odje stated this in Warri while reviewing the NNDC’s activities.

He lamented that the federal and the Niger Delta states seem to have abdicated their responsibility of developing the region to the NDDC.

According to him, the NDDC is supposed to be a complementing agency, but the situation now is that it had been saddled with a responsibility too large for its resources.

Mundiaga-Odje who is from an oil bearing communiuty of Evwreni, in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State said all the roads in his community had been tarred by the NDDC.

"The NDDC is now alive to its responsibilities and facing the challenges of developing the region. Criticisms has made them to sit up", he noted.

He said the commission has promised Delta State 108 projects in the fiscal year, but wondered if the agency would be able to achieve its lofty goals if it is being under funded by the Federal Government and the oil companies.

The Federal Government is supposed to give NDDC 15 per cent, but only about 10 per cent gets to the agency. Of course, the oil companies have been following the footsteps of the Federal Government, they have been contributing about two per cent instead of the three percent as stipulated".

While comparing the achievements of the NDDC and the states of the region, Mundiaga-Odje said that the NDDC has performed far better than most of them.
