Defence HQ sets up task force against warring Rivers militia

By John Ighodaro
Friday, September 10, 2004

PORT HARCOURT —THE Defence Headquarters has constituted a task force to fight militia groups in the nooks and crannies  of Rivers State. The state has been immersed lately in battles between armed gangs leading to death of many people and  destruction of properties.

The task force comprising the 97 Special Operations Groups of the Air Force, government security agencies in the state, officers  and men from the 2 Brigade, NNS Pathfinder is tagged: “Operation Flush Out 3.”

Breaking the news in Port Harcourt yesterday, the Army Public Relations Officer of the 2 Brigade, Port Harcourt, Captain  Onyema Kanu said the task force was poised to restore peace and security in the state by stopping the deadly activities of militia  groups.

His words: “The new outfit thus replaces the existing joint internal security operations in the state. Members of the public would  observe a reinforced movement of military personnel, helicopters and other security agencies in some parts of the state.”

In the wake of Rivers State stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt and subsequent media reports on the issues raised at the  meeting, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Chief Mike Elechi had faulted media reports on the situation in  Rivers State saying they are sensational.

His words: “You need to address the issues the way they are, it is in Port Harcourt the journalists are writing their stories.”
Captain Onyema Kanu has however appealed to the people to co-operate with the new task force as it goes about ridding the  state of militia groups and restoring peace and tranquility to the state.
