Ogbeh cautions speakers against feuding with governors
PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has cautioned speakers of the 28 states controlled by it to disagree with their governors only on matters of principles.
Ogbeh, who addressed the speakers at a seminar organised for them in Abuja yesterday, said where such disagreement occurred it should not be allowed to degenerate into crisis to the extent that it would affect their constitutional responsibilities.
"You are supposed to disagree with your governors without a crisis. You should be there to pass laws and say the truth to the governors without crisis, otherwise you run the risk of being removed or impeached," he said.
"Assemblymen make more enemies than friends. No governor likes being criticised on the floor of the Assembly but you have a job to do. The Constitution has given you powers over management of public funds and oversight functions which you must discharge."
He told the speakers that they had a dilemma of drawing a line between criticising the governors and risking their job, urging them to manage the dilemma well.
Ogbeh advised them not to mistake cooperation for conspiracy with the governors.
House of Representatives, Alhaji Bello Masari, represented by the Chief Whip, Bawa Bwari noted that friction between executive and the legislature was normal, stressing that the long period of military interregnum had not helped matters.
He said even the Constitution envisaged it and worked out ways of resolving such disagreement.
