Fire service shifts focus to prevention approach
IN view of the enormous loss of lives and property to fire incidents in the country, the Federal Fire Service has shifted emphasis from attacking the menace to preventing it.
Speaking at a press conference on "No-Burn Firehouse Expo" slated for September 14 and 15, the Command Officer of the Federal Fire Service, Mr. Leo Ekong, painted a picture of the consequences of infernos in the country since 1980.
His words: As you are all aware, Fire has no cure but can be prevented. That we live in a society where safety is always relegated to the background is obvious. Many public and private structures have been reduced to chunks of coal by rampaging and raging infernos.
"The value at a rough estimate from 1980-2004 runs over N900 billion for these property. It took years to put these structures up, but took fire some hours to destroy them. I am sure we all appreciate the fact that every fire that burns has an underlying cost implication in terms of losses.
"A fire outbreak on businesses and organisations is the shortest cut to the hospital, the labour market and the grave. This destruction by fire translates into poverty, joblessness, homelessness, helplessness and hunger.
"The truth still remains that fire is right now seeking a property to burn, a job to end, a life to lose and an everlasting scar to inflict on person. It neither respects age nor class nor does it have respect for tribe and religion".
Ekong expressed hope that the introduction of No-Burn into the Nigerian Market would reduce the chances of small fires becoming destructive.
No-Burn is a fire-retardant and fire reactant product that can protect any surface treated with it from heat and flame.
The Managing Director of No-Burn Fire Prevention Services Ltd., Okorie Uzoma Angus, said the product does not serve as a fire-proof but can give one enough time (30 mins to 2 hrs) to safely evacuate properties, or more likely allow one to put out a fire before it gets out of control".
