FG, Australian Firm Trade Words over $85m Scam By Paul Ohia An Australian economic consultancy firm, Global Unification, has accused Federal Government of turning deaf ears to a revelation it made earlier this year that it has discovered $85 million laundered by Nigerians. The money, according to the firm, was traced to Australian banks. But sources at the Finance Ministry in Abuja told THISDAY that since the submission of the complaints by the firm, Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has personally launched an investigation into the allegation. "The minister had, on receipt of the report, instructed the Nigerian High Commission in Australia to investigate the matter and recently a sort of report had been received which the ministry is currently working upon. I cannot provide more information as not to jeopardise our investigation," said the source. Accordingly, the Nigerian Deputy High Commissioner to Australia, Ibrahim Saleh, who confirmed the commencement of the investigation, adding that a journalist from Nigeria may be required to aid the probe in the spirit of the new freedom of information bill. Also speaking with THISDAY on phone from Sydney, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Unification Australia, Mr. Peter Reed, recalled that he had earlier came to Nigeria to personally submit his firm's findings during which he disclosed that the money which was stashed away in some Australian banks and financial institutions was a part of a rip-off under a multi-million dollar construction project in then Ministry of Works and Housing, late last year.
