We've Failed Our Youths - Uchendu By Oke Epia The failure of leadership and other avenues of mentorship has been identified as one of the reasons responsible for the spate of moral decadence, restlessness and restiveness among the youths of the country. This observation was made by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Andrew Uchendu, in a bill he co-sponsored for the enactment of a law to make provision for the establishment of youth development centres in local government areas in the country. While lamenting long years of neglect suffered by youths, which has led them to be "inextricably linked with the five internationally known harmful risk behaviours of youths, namely, smoking, alcohol, sex, drugs and violence," the lawmaker berated the leadership of the country. "Instead of being models of excellence and good conduct, some leaders have rather chosen to be the shame of our generation," Uchendu said, adding that "some have been found to have looted public treasury, mismanaged public institutions entrusted into their care; perverted justice on the alter of greed, displaying unparalleled level of conspicuous consumption that is not supported by their antecedents." Because of this he called on leaders "to apologise to our youths, show them love, show them concern, and prove that we have changed," saying that "Government to elaborately plan for the development of viable youth development programmes."
