FG Restates Commitment to Electoral Promises
By Bennett Oghifo

Federal Government is committed to fulfilling all its electoral promises to Nigerians as part of its desire to uplift the standard of living and quality of life of the people.

Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, made this assertion Friday, in his office while receiving His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr.) Sir, Maxwell Omeire Kanu, Ochiriozuo of Ejezie Izuogu from Imo State.

Ogunlewe said his ministry has received a clear instruction from President Olusegun Obasanjo to maintain all 36, 000 kilometres of federal roads nationwide. According to the him, Obasanjo believed that it is his duty and that of his entire cabinet to address all the yearnings and aspirations of the electorate, as governance can never be credible or good if electoral promises to cater for the needs of the people are not fulfilled.

Ogunlewe averred that by renegading on their electoral promises, politicians make the electorate lose faith in democracy. In his view, such a scenario would be a disaster, not only for the political class but also for the entire society. He added that Nigeria as a country is capable of doing much more to improve the lot of its people if elected officers at federal, state and local government levels show more commitment to addressing the needs of the people.

Earlier in his speech, Kanu said he was in the minister's office to thank him and Mr. President for the visible demonstration of political they have shown to better the lot of Nigerians through the road maintenance programme.

According to the traditional ruler, there was a visible difference in government's road recovery programme today, as one can now drive smoothly to any part of the country, unlike in the previous years. He observed that he has discussed and consulted with a wide range of people, including traditional rulers and opinion leaders and that the general view is that there is hope for Nigerians and for the country's economic recovery programme as a result of the government's road maintenance efforts.

He urged the minister to remain steadfast and focused on the good work he was doing throughout the country.
