'Why We Demolish Illegal Structures in Yenagoa' From John Iwori in Yenagoa Bayelsa State government has rationalised the on-going demolition of illegal structures in the state capital, Yenagoa, saying the action was in tandem with government's desire to respect the masterplan. The state government's reaction was coming on the heels of insinuations in some quarters that the demolition exercise was aimed at certain individuals and interest groups opposed to government. In an interview with THISDAY in Yenagoa at the weekend, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Capital Development, Hon. Obuebite Jonathan, said the demolition exercise was in line with the contents of the Yenagoa Master Plan (YMP). "The demolition of illegal structures exercise is not a witch-hunting measure. Therefore people should not see it as a means of undoing certain individuals or groups. The essence of the exercise is to remove any structure not built in line with the Yenagoa Master Plan. This is because the masterplan has provision for low and high-density, utilities, commercial and green areas. "In every step we take, the masterplan remains our guide. And if we allow people to build without adhering strictly to it, then we shall not only create problems for ourselves but generations yet unborn," he said.
