Ogunlewe Assures on Roads Devt
By Bennett Oghifo
Minister of Works, Sena-tor Adeseye Ogunlewe, has reaffirmed that Federal Government would remain accountable to the electorate that voted the party into power.
The Minister stated this while receiving the members of the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee on FERMA Projects, who visited him in his Mabushi office to present their assessment report on the implementation of the Operation 500 Roads programme nationwide.
He stated that the committee was set up in pursuance of the ministry's commitment to accountability to allow independent, external observers, users and stakeholders in the roads sector who were non-partisan to do a thorough assessment on behalf of the Nigerian people.
Said he: "The Committee was set up to do thorough assessment of our performance in terms of money we have spent, how we have spent it. Are the projects fake? Are they not existing? If they exist, where are they? You cannot spend government money on imaginary projects, that nobody is allowed to see, that nobody is allowed to assess, that no body is allowed to criticise."
Ogunlewe implored that government should be criticised thoroughly because criticism is part of development. He noted that "it is all in our own interest. Government should be told where they are going wrong. Government should be told where they are going right. It is no longer business as usual. Everybody should be able to participate in terms of asking questions, and criticising us. We are very ready and available for any form of criticisms from any part of Nigeria. And that is why I have given out my phone numbers. And I have asked all the Controllers of Works to also give out their phone numbers, because we must be responsive to the yearnings of members of the public."
The minister commended the members of the committee for making sacrifices of time and resources to tour the entire stretch of the country without any money, allowances or salary from government for the exercise.
