Catholic Bishops Condemn Slavery, Bad Governance By Andrew Ahiante Catholic Bishops in the West African region have condemned slave trade and human trafficking in the sub-region, just as they condemned bad governance occasioning acts of intimidation, violence, rigging and manipulation of elections. Arising from their 10th plenary assembly which ended in Ghana recently, the Catholic Bishops under the aegis of Association of Episcopal Conferences of Anglo-phone West Africa (AECAWA) in their communique recalled and condemned modern trend of slave trade which involved the transportation of between 12 and 50 million Africans. Describing the trend as "dehumanising," they said such a situation reduced victims to chattel and property. "It entails so much contempt and cruelty, a shameful event (which) immeasurably enriched Europe and America (and) conversely and incalculably improved Africa," they stressed. The communique made available by Anthony Cardinal Okogie, a participant, and made public by Rev. Fr. Gabriel Osu, Director, Social Communications, Lagos Catholic Archdiocese equally condemned modern-day slavery in human trafficking in the sub-region involving "children for cheap labour and women for sexual exploitation, saying "we strongly condemned this inglorious trade."
