Alamieyeseigha Charges Corps Members
From John Iwori in Yenagoa
Governor Diepreye Alam-ieyeseigha of Bayelsa State has charged corps members posted to the state to shun all anti-democratic and revisionist forces.
The governor, who stated this during the swearing of Batch B 2004 corps members, said the corps members must keep away from self-seeking politicians who may wish to use them for their selfish interests.
Alamieyeseigha, who was represented at the occasion by his deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, enjoined the corps members to put the invaluable experience and skills, which they would acquire in the course of the service into maximum use for the progress, unity and development of the nation.
Challenging the corps members to be abreast with on-going government re-forms, the governor urged them to be involved in the various enlightenment campaigns programmes against HIV/AIDS.
The corps members were further charged to exhibit a high degree of discipline and to continue to be guided by the spirit of mutual respect, trust, tolerance and love among themselves and the wider society.
Alamieyeseigha who said the NYSC scheme remains as relevant today as it was at inception almost thirty years ago, advised the corps members to explore avenues of self-employment.
In her address, the State Co-coordinator of the NYSC, Miss Justina Andirya said because of the seriousness government attaches to the scheme, there should be no half-hearted measures in the members approach to the service but absolute loyalty, dedication and commitment.
She said the NYSC scheme has a system of rewarding those who excel during the service year and charged corps members to be innovative and exemplary in their conduct in order to qualify for such awards.
The State Co-coordinator lauded the state government for the moral and financial support to the NYSC, even she expressed hope that government will give due attention to the updating of facilities at the orientation camp while, awaiting the provision of a permanent camp.
