Dariye: Nigerians Criticise Attitude Of Public Officers
NIGERIANS have continued to react to the arrest in London of Joshua Dariye, the suspended governor of Plateau State, on charges of money laundering.
Some Nigerians spoken to by The Guardian wants the federal government to cause full scale investigation into the matter, especially as the Code of Conduct Bureau has given him an ultimatum to report himself before it to answer charges of misconduct levied against him.
The National Problems and Solutions Organisation, in a statement signed by its National Co-ordinator, Dr Wale Omole, at the weekend said Dariye should never be allowed to return to his seat as the governor of Plateau State, it instead wants Dariye's deputy sworn in.
The association demanded that Dariye should be tried and punished under the sharia legal code while the federal government should repatriate the alleged stolen money from London.
According to the group, the arrest of Dariye has vindicated the action of President Olusegun Obasanjo in suspending the governor, while also providing insight into what many public officers, especially those in high places do.
"If Nigerians know some of what their respected political ideologues do, they would hack them to death," it said.
Constitutional lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, said some people violate the code of conduct by their action because no public officer is supposed to engage in any private business while still in office.
He noted that governors, ministers, commissioners and lawmakers have been known to siphon money meant for the upliftment of the masses.
He posited that the Code of Conduct Tribunal was suppose to be the effective court in Nigeria but regretted that government officials still indulge in unethical practices.
He therefore called on the Code of Conduct Tribunal to, among other things, compel the three tiers of government to inform Nigerians of their activities, how many persons have been convicted as well as those under surveillance.
According to him, even when "section 308 says no governor, deputy Governor, Senators and other can be prosecuted, detained or arrested while still in office, but they can be arrested immediately they hand over power at the parade ground."
