PDP Scribe Decries Poverty Level
THE National Secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, has called on West African countries to rise to the challenge of poverty in the region.
Ogbulafor, who spoke in Accra, Ghana at the weekend while receiving the "Nobles International award," given him by the West Africa Nobles Forum, noted that the sub-region is abundantly blessed with resources which are begging for attention.
"Whether it is the oil fields in Nigeria, the diamond deposits in Liberia, the Gold, agricultural and aquatic endowments of Ghana, the solid minerals deposits in Cote d'Ivoire, our people have enough to transform our environment if the right things are done," he said.
He, however, noted that the lofty objectives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) would help a lot to transform the sub-region.
Ogbulafor said the issues of poverty and underdevelopment could only be tackled through co-operation among West African countries, stressing that the institutions on ground needs to be strengthened.
"We need to be less sentimental in our approach to governance," he said.. "Well thought out reforms such as political, economic and social reforms going on in Nigeria under President Olusegun Obasanjo are necessary for the people's emancipation."
