THe suspended Governor of Plateau State Chief Joshua Dariye, might have finally decided to shelve his ‘good boy’ posture to seek legal remedy for his current travails. Sunday Vanguard can reveal authoritatively that although the governor is yet to return from his foreign trip, contacts have been made with two top legal luminaries in the country - Chief Rotimi Williams and Professor Ben Nwabueze - to take his brief to challenge the move to arraign him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The major issue for now, according to sources, might revolve around whether his suspension from office has removed the immunity conferred on him by the constitution to warrant the attempt to arraign him before the tribunal. It was gathered weekend that supporters of the governor held series of meetings Friday and yesterday (Saturday) to decide what should be the next move following reports that he was about to be taken to the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Some of them were said to have left for Lagos yesterday (Saturday) to follow up initial discussions with the two legal luminaries who were said to have agreed in principle to take the brief.
A reliable source said this Wednesday had been fixed for another meeting to conclude the brief. Sunday Vanguard learnt that after the issue of immunity might have been tackled, the issue of the legality of the suspension of the governor from office which he (Dariye) refused to pursue initially despite promptings from many legal luminaries and rights groups may now be explored.
According to a source close to the meetings held by the supporters, “we have been pushed to the wall and no legitimate options would be ruled out from now on. The initial reluctance to explore the legal option was taken because we felt we should cooperate with the Federal Government within the six months of emergency and use it for stock taking to learn from our mistakes. “But it has become obvious that ‘politricks’ has taken over and it is obvious that our obedient posture has not paid off. Rather, it appears it has worsened our position.”
