NATIONAL NEWS Okonjo-Iweala honoured by Carribean’s oldest varsity Sunday, September 12, 2004 MINISTER of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been honoured with an Honourary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the Northern Caribbean University, Mandeville, Jamaica. Founded in 1919, the university is the oldest private university in the Caribbean. The honour is an acknowledgment of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s work, as a seasoned international financial expert. According to the citation, the Finance Minister is one of the few women in Africa holding positions of responsibility at the highest levels of global financial management. The award is based on her impressive performance at the World Bank where she was Vice-President and Corporate Secretary. It also recognizes her current leadership role in President Obasanjo’s economic reform programme. In her reaction, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala described the award as “a great honour and wonderful encouragement because it demonstrates that the world is becoming more aware of what the administration under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo is doing to restructure the economy for sustainable development.
