ALHAJI Balarabe Musa, Chairman of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), has decried money politics played by Nigerian politicians, saying it has led to confusion in the polity such that “there is a rapid accumulation of power and property in a system controlled by thieves”.
Balarabe spoke in Lagos on “Executive Rendezvous”, an interactive programme on Multi-Channel Television (MCTV), Nigerian’s First Cable TV hosted by Mr. Olu Obafemi a veteran journalist.
The CNPP leader told viewers: “You now need N20b to contest the presidential election... Even to run for the lowly local government polls you need several millions of naira”.
Balarabe was the first civilian Governor of old Kaduna State in Northern Nigeria. He declared: “With my position as the former governor, I cannot hope now to win even a council election in the state because I can’t muster the huge amount needed to compete”.
Asked to speak on rotational presidency, the former governor said it is a temporary panacea to the country’s problems. According to him, there are more fundamental ways of resolving the crises in the nation.
He returned to his pet theme of a revolutionary path as the only answer. “A revolution will come because everything about Nigeria is negative”, he said.
But if in the absence of his revolutionary dream, Nigeria must continue with this experiment based on the 1999 constitution, Balarabe proferred some urgent steps that must be taken.
First, Nigeria must reform the Electoral Law and process. She must rid her leaders of dictatorship tendencies, while opposition parties must become responsible. Money politics also must be eliminated and formation of political parties must be based strictly on principles.
Balarabe believe that with these conditions the situation can still be salvaged to usher in some level of development and growth in the country.
