Executive Secretary of the state Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB), Mr. Uche Edomobi disclosed this while speaking to newsmen in Owerri. He said the state government subvents his board to the tune of N220 million monthly while the board auguments this with N20 million to pay the teachers. The SEMB chief who described education as the biggest industry in Imo explained that the state parades the highest number of secondary schools east of the Niger as well as incurs the fattest wage bill in the payment of teachers’ salaries. Edomobi lauded Governor Udenwa for his strong commitment towards the welfare of teachers and urged the teachers to reciprocate the governor’s gestures through hardwork, loyalty, and dedication to duty. In recognition of the place of education as the greatest industry in the state, the executive secretary said more schools had been built, many more rehabilitated while government had given her seal of recognition to more privately owned schools.
