Market leader exonerates Ngige from traders’ rift

GOVERNOR Chris Ngige of Anambra State has no hand in the Crisis rocking Ozomagala Building Materials Association and Ezenweke Street traders in Onitsha.

Chairman of the Concerned Traders of Ozomagala and Ezenweke traders Chief Anthony Okonkwo, told Saturday Champion yesterday that Governor Ngige as a father of the state raised a panel to get to the root of the matter based on a petition addressed to him.

Chief Okonkwo who was reacting to placards carried by traders last Tuesday at the headquarters of Onitsha North Local Government venue of the tribunal, said the action was the handiwork of Ozomagala Traders Association executives led by Chief Mark Aguiyi.

He said contrary to the claims of Ozomagala Traders Association executive that the petitioners are from Alor, the governor’s home town, himself, the chairman and another member of the group Barnabas Okonkwo hail from Adazi-Anin, Anaocha local government area of the state.

Chief Okonkwo said that some other members such as James Chukwu is from Obeledu, and Ikechukwu Aniekwe from Enugu State.

Stating that Governor Ngige has never known these people, he said the setting up of the panel was prompted by the petition they sent to him.

He reiterated their earlier allegation that the tenure of executive of Ozomagala Traders Association’s has expired adding that whatever they did was "ultravires".

Cataloguing other sins of the executives, Chief Okonkwo said since they started the building of new markets at Ogidi in 1989, they have refused to give account of the association’s funds.

He said Chief Aguiyi who is the chairman is also the chairman of Ozomagala Traders’ Cooperative, Allocation Committee, construction committee and Board of Trustees.

Chief Okonkwo asked Governor Ngige not to be black mailed by the antics of Aguiyi’s executives, urging the panel to be courageous enough to get to the root of the matter.

Some traders believe to be sympathisers of Aguiyi’s executives last Tuesday carried placards demonstrating against the parties.
