Aviation authority lifts ban on airline
RESPITE came at the weekend for embattled Dornier Aviation Nigeria AIEP Limited (DANA) as the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has lifted the suspension order imposed on the airline.
The airline was accused of violating the minimum standard for operation in the industry.
In a statement issued by the newly constituted management of DANA, it stressed that "we are pleased to inform all our numerous customers, clients and the general public that the NCAA has lifted the suspension imposed on our Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) and Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) approval".
According to the statement, "lifting of the suspension followed DANA's new management willingness and demonstration of remedial actions in respect of the identified mistakes and all efforts are being made to comply with NCAA observations and recommendations".
"To maintain the top rating mark of the company in its 25 years of service in Nigeria and to compete favourably in the Nigeria industry, DANA is undergoing a complete re-engineering process. This involves further infusion of new technologies, competent and dedicated manpower and additional investments," it added.
The statement continued: "The new management will spare no effort to keep our customers confident and satisfied, considering our vast experience, upgraded equipment and facilities".
At the wake of the suspension order, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, Chief T.D. Oyelade, said "the airline has no accountable manager as required by the Air Navigation Regulations (ANR).
He added: "This points to complete lack of accountability in continuing air worthiness, safe operation and general safety matters".
Oyelade also noted that DANA's "maintenance shops were being manned by unqualified personnel due to the retrenchment of qualified maintenance personnel," while "the calibration of tools was not carried out when due".
He remarked further that the airline operators were found guilty of "dangerous operations as a result of lack of accountability and complete destruction of exporting methods".
However, an official of NCAA in Kaduna, who spoke under anonymity, pointed out that "DANA has been cleared of the earlier suspension imposed on it and the company can now start operation based on the restructuring exercise it has undertaken".
The official also made available a letter of clearance which directed DANA to resume operations.
The letter, signed by S.O. Oduselu on behalf of the NCAA director-general, noted that "due to your demonstration of readiness to comply and all your activities to comply since the suspension, vide this letter, the suspension on your AOC/AMO certificates is hereby lifted for you to commence operation in the next seven days".
