The Guardian's arts reporter, Nnabuife, wins award
THE position of The Guardian newspaper as the flagship of Nigerian press was again confirmed as scholars and experts meeting during the 30th anniversary of the Auchi Art School acknowledged its leadership in arts and culture journalism.
At the forum The Guardian's staff reporter, Chuka Nnabuife was given an award for excellence in arts and culture reporting. Nnabuife was honoured especially for his extensive coverage of developments in Nigerian contemporary art schools. He won the award along with Ozolua Uhakheme of the Daily Independent newspaper.
Until recently, Uhakheme was a staff reporter in The Guardian's Art/Media Desk. Though absent at the week-long event which included conferences, tours to cultural landmarks in Edo State and the opening of an ultra-modern art gallery in the School of Arts and Designs, Auchi Polytechnic, the two journalists were praised for their incisive and balanced writings as well as coverage of happenings in the Auchi as well as other art institutions.
The award tagged: Auchi Exceller also involved recognition of some other achievers in other areas of art.
Among other awardees are Dr. Edwin Debebs, a painter art scholar and Christian clergy. There were honours also for Mr. Sam Ovraiti, a frontline painter and mentor of many young artists trained in Auchi Polytechnic as well as Mr. Clement Emodah, an experimental potter, proprietor of a ceramic industry and head of Anadea Art Institute - a non governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of arts and culture.
Dignitaries at the event included Sir Ohimai Omorebe Ebohemi, rector of Auchi Polytechnic; Dr. Paul Chike Dike, Director General, National Gallery of Arts (NGA) and a representative of the Otaru, the Royal Father of Auchi, Alhaji H. A. Momoh.
Also present at the occasion was Prof. Jean M. Borgetti of Clark University, Worcestar State College, U.S.A.
Receiving Nnabuife's award over the weekend, from The Guardians Assistant Editor Arts/Media, Mr. Kabir Alabi Garba, promised that the paper would not relent in its quest to be the quintessence of arts and culture journalism.
