BENIN CITY — MINISTER OF DEFENCE, Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso, weekend, said the decision by the Federal Government to deploy a special Task Force code-named "Operation Flush Out-3" to replace the internal military organ in Port Harcourt, Rivers state was based on the inability of the internal security to arrest the increasing incidence of armed gang attacks and killings in the state.
According to him, the duration and extent of operations of the task force would be determined by the Rivers state government and the return to peace and ceasefire among rival gangs involved in the war that has claimed many lives and property in the state.
Speaking with newsmen on arrival in Benin City for the bithday celebration of the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Alhaji Kwakwanso pointed out that the Federal government had to react to the situation to avoid a total breakdown of law and order in the area and control the issue of illegal arms in the state.
He said, "well, I am sure you know that there were some high security problems in the area. And of course, once such security problem occurs and gets on the increase, the Nigerian Police obviously that are there, may not be able to cope and as need for the military to be there arose, they went there.”
He pointed out that though the function of the Task Force was stated, it will liaise with the internal security organ and the state government to ensure there is peace in the area.
On the crisis rocking the Western region of Darfur in Sudan, the Defence Minister noted that the involvement of the federal government in the crisis was based on the Sudan's membership of the African Union (AU) and the threat to Nigerian nationals in Sudan.
“Dafur is an African country and there are Nigerians living in the place. Once there is need somewhere and there was a request, either by the AU and UN, definitely Nigeria will react positively because I am sure you know that there are so many Nigerian nationals in Sudan.
"It is our collective interest to ensure peace and stability in the continent, that we are there.”
