Onyia backs African solution to Darfur crisis

    MALACHY UZENDU, Abuja

FORMER Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia has called on the United Nations to allow the African Peace Process going on in Abuja in respect of the crisis in Darfur, Sudan, to run its full course.

Onyia told newsmen in Abuja as the 30-day ultimatum from the United Nations to the Sudanese government to restore peace and halt the humanitarian problem in the Darfur region expires.

He, however, warned that the Sudanese Government must be ready to allow the Abuja peace process to succeed, "commitment of the Sudanese government to the efforts by the African Union is at the heart of solution to the crisis."

According to him, for the Abuja Peace Process to succeed, "the Sudanese government must be sincere that the ceasefire in the Darfur region was real. He also advised that the Northern African country should allow more observer troops from the African Union to monitor the ceasefire.

Chief Onyia condemned the stand of the Sudanese government to limit the number of the observer troops to 300 soldiers, stressing that this number would be incapable of effecting genuine ceasefire.

He also noted that the Sudanese government troops could not be trusted to discharge such delicate responsibility, especially where the rebel troops have accused government of deliberate genocide on the black and non-Arab citizens of Darfur.
