Software practitioners berate NITDA Piqued by what they see as the lackadaisical attitude of the Nigerian Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to the development of software in the country, software practitioners, under the aegis of Institute of Software Practitioners Council of Nigeria (ISPON), last week, tongue, lashed the government agency, saying it has not made its mark in the industry. Revealing their grievance at an exhibition organised by ISPON last week in Lagos, the software practitioners said NITDA’s priority had always been on hardware and telecoms. ISPON’s president, Mr. Chijioke Agu, who spoke on behalf of ISPON members, said NITDA had not promoted any long lasting policy that would strengthen Nigerian software development in the country. The ISPON president said instead of focusing on hardware and telecoms aspect of ICT in the country, NITDA would do well by putting software development on its programme as this would make Nigeria export software. His words: “NITDA has not done anything to develop software in the country. It is yet to make its mark in the industry. Its priority has always been on hardware and telecoms. We, in this software trade, have not felt their impact. And this is paining us. We are using this medium to tell NITDA to start paying attention to software development. We also call on government to set up software promotion council.” He explained that if NITDA could lend a hand to ISPON in few years to come, Nigerian softwares would be toast of Silicon Valley, the world software market.
