Cross River to spend N1.7b on road project From Bassey Ita, in Calabar The Cross River State government is to spend N1.7 billion on the construction of a dual carriage road to link Calabar with other parts of the state. The road, which runs from Mary Slessor Avenue to the Calabar/Ikom highway, is 12.4km.The state’s commissioner for information, Mr Patrick Ogar, told newsmen during a media tour of project sites in the state, that the purpose of the highway is to check the usual traffic congestion along the Murtala Mohammed and Calabar/Ikom highways. The site engineer of Lecona Construction, Mr Jame Irek, told reporters at the construction site that the earth works and drainages will be completed soon to pave way for laterite. Mr. Irek hinted that the road will have a pavement to guard against accidents adding that the work will be completed next year. Also, the state government has begun work on the construction of an 18-classroom block at the Model Secondary School, Uwanse. The school, which will be replicated in the 18 local government areas of the state, is part of government’s bid to tackle the problem of shortage of classroom accommodation in schools, information commissioner, Mr. Patrick Ogar, said while conducting newsmen round an ongoing construction work at the motherless babies home. Mr Ogar also said that efforts are being put in place by government to complete a 100 room capacity building for the motherless babies.     .TO NEXT NEWS PAGE...
